There is something for everyone on the doorstep- walking, cycling, canoeing, windsurfing or just sitting by the river watching the river flow.
We are situated at the bottom of the Wasdale Valley which boasts England’s highest mountain- Scafell Pike, deepest lake- Wastwater, smallest chuch –St Olafs and biggest liar –an annual competition held at the Bridge Inn.
The old Post Office Campsite is a popular base for walking groups and mountain climbers wishing to scale the heights of Scarfell Pike, red pike and Great Gable.
The campsite is also situated five minutes away from Britain’s Favorite view
England's Northwest
Wastwater, The Lake District, Cumbria
"This landscape has fired up the imaginations of painters, poets and climbers. And it's not lost any of its power to surprise, charm and thrill us today. I have been coming here for near on twenty years now with my family... and it holds dear memories for me."
Sally Whittaker
The Lake District is inspirational at any time of year, as many a poet has found. But you don't have to be Wordsworth or Coleridge to be moved by the views of this magical rural retreat. Glorious lakes, towering fells and winding pathways will tempt you round the next corner, to the next view.
But for Sally Whittaker, there's only one view: Wastwater, England's deepest and possibly most scenic lake. Surrounded by stately mountains such as Great Gable, Red Pike and Scafell Pike (England's highest peak), Wastwater is a climbers' mecca - indeed, the valley and its mountains gave rise to the sport of rock climbing. The winding lakeshore road to the head of Wasdale Valley gives impressive views of the famous screes dropping dramatically to the water's edge. Tiny St Olaf's church is dwarfed by the natural magnificence of this magnetic setting.

In the village next to the valley – Eskdale is Historic Muncaster Castle with it’s magnificent gardens and the home of the British Owl breeding centre. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Miniture Railway runs from Ravenglass with it’s Roman Bathhouse up to Dalegarth, with various stops along the way.
At Boot, just above Dalegarth station is a recently restored water mill, across the valley the delightful St Catherine’s Church beside the river Esk. There are various walks along the river, over the stepping stones with several deep pools for keen swimmers.
