

The heart of the Lake District is about an hours drive in any direction, over Hard Knott Pass for the brave, or via Broughton to the south and Cockermouth to the north.
Whitehaven is a Georgian town which hosts the Maritime faestival every two years. Once a busy harbor it now has a marina and is visited by the Tall Ships race.
Carlisle, the Border city, has a castle and much of it’s ancient walls remaining. The roman wall begins on the Solway coast just west of Carlisle and meanders along the England Scotland border all the way to Walls End on the east coast.
For a rainy day there is the Sellafield visitors centre, full of interactive computers to explain the workings of this busy industry.
